Internship/Thesis - Arc Flash Analysis

We are looking for you, an ambitious bachelor’s, master’s or Diplom student, to support our Electrical Unit in the Energy and Environmental Department by doing an internship project focused on the analysis of arc flash related pressure rise ("pressure waves") in switchgear substations for our location in Böhlen, Germany.

Project description:

The operation of electrical assets involves several personal and reliability risks, requiring the implementation of various technical and organizational measures to minimize these risks. While there is a well-established hazard analysis for thermal stress resulting from an arc flash, the assessment of related pressure is often neglected. This project aims to assess potential hazards arising from pressure increases due to an arc flash.

Depending on the project's scope, this internship presents a potential opportunity for a master's thesis.


  • Acquiring knowledge of the theory of pressure increase related to arc flashes
  • Gather information on measures to prevent pressure rise related to arc flashes
  • Create a model/simulation for calculations
  • Develop a recommendation for safe operation from the knowledge gained and the simulation results


  • You are currently studying for a bachelor's / master’s degree or equivalent in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or physics
  • You have a good working knowledge of German (B2 level) and English
  • You have first experience with simulation tools
  • You are capable of working independently
  • You have basic knowledge of solving mathematical problems
  • You are interested in solving complex practical problems
  • You have basic programming skills
  • You can start between February and July in 2024 for a period of 6-12 months (exact timing to be discussed).
