Trai­nee­ship Test board design and ASIC cha­rac­te­ri­za­tion

The IC Design groups deve­lop inno­va­tive design auto­ma­tion tools and designs app­li­ca­tion-spe­ci­fic mixed-signal ICs from sys­tem con­cept down to sili­con veri­fi­ca­tion. Tar­get app­li­ca­ti­ons include auto­mo­tive, indus­trial, and also bio-medi­cal elec­tro­nics using tech­no­logy nodes from 350 nm down to 22 nm. A spe­cial focus is on the deve­lop­ment of ana­log/mixed-signal buil­ding blocks such as ana­log front­ends or data con­ver­ters in Sili­con-On-Insu­la­tor (SOI) tech­no­lo­gies for ultra-low-power sen­sor app­li­ca­ti­ons.

Working field:

The design of high inte­gra­ted mixed signal ICs beco­mes more and more com­plex with decrea­sing gate length tech­no­lo­gies. In the ana­lo­gue domain lay­out depen­dent effects bet­ween sin­gle devices have a gro­wing impact in the beha­vior of the real fabri­ca­ted IC. Simu­la­ti­ons during the design phase can’t illus­trate this beha­vior com­ple­tely, the gap bet­ween simu­la­tion and real sili­con is gro­wing. Impro­ved devices models, simu­la­tion pro­ce­du­res and design tech­ni­ques are the only way to close the gap, but need high-pre­cision ASIC cha­rac­te­ri­za­tion. Under­stan­ding these tech­no­lo­gies fea­tures by proofing simu­la­tion results with sili­con mea­su­rements is the key com­pe­tence facing this chal­lenge. The fol­lo­wing task will be cove­red:

  • Design of eva­lua­tion boards in coope­ra­tion with inte­gra­ted cir­cuit desi­gners
  • Imple­men­ta­tion of test set­ups inclu­ding exe­cu­tion auto­ma­tion
  • Cha­rac­te­ri­za­tion of actual ASIC pro­to­ty­pes



  • Are a stu­dent of Com­pu­ter Sci­ence, Elec­tri­cal Engi­nee­ring, Infor­ma­tion Tech­no­logy or simi­lar
  • Have expe­ri­ence in PCB design
  • Have good under­stan­ding in elec­tri­cal mea­su­rement pro­ce­du­res
  • Are good in wri­ting and com­mu­ni­ca­tion
  • Have good know­ledge in pro­gramming lan­guages e.g. Python, TCL, C
  • Have optio­nal expe­ri­ence in FPGA pro­gramming
